Affiliated to:![]() ![]() | Cambridge Scottish Society Coastal Walk, Dunwich, 12th September 2010The walk on Sunday 12th September will be from Dunwich on the Suffolk coast, across Westleton Heath, past the Minsmere Nature Reserve (RSPB), up the coast and back across Dunwich Heath (see map). It is around 10 miles of easy walking, shorter versions are possible. Meet on the grass verge by the church (W of the Ship Inn, IP17 3DT) in Dunwich village at 13.00 (GR TM475706, Landranger map 156). All being well we will have a tea stop at Cliff House (Dunwich Heath NT) about 4pm, and we should be back at Dunwich by 18.00.According to Wikipedia, "Dunwich was the capital of East Anglia 1500 years ago and was a prosperous seaport and centre of the wool trade during the Early Middle Ages, with a natural harbour formed by the mouths of the River Blyth and the River Dunwich, but the harbour and most of the town has since been lost to coastal erosion. The town's decline began in 1286 when a sea surge hit the East Anglian coast, and it was eventually reduced through coastal erosion to the village it is today." Dunwich is a few miles south of Southwold and is best approached via Yoxford on the A1120. Journey time is around one and three quarter hours from the centre of Cambridge. The Ship Inn serves meals from 12.00 (Sunday lunch £11.95), and Flora Tea Rooms, famous for fish and chips, is on the beach and opens at 11.00. The Ship Inn also serves food in the evening. There is parking in the beach car park (free, donation box) and in the road by the pub. The Dunwich Museum is open from 11.30. The RSPB reserve at nearby Minsmere is open from 09.00. Please let Nicola know if you are coming and if you need/can offer a lift. (nicolaathardwick at googlemail.com, tel: 01954 210020) |
